As a legal body, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is owned by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. It is responsible for building, improving, maintaining, and overseeing India’s civil aviation facilities. Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) services are provided over Indian skies and nearby oceans.

There are instrument landing systems (ILS) on 52 runways, and most airports have night landing facilities. Fifteen airports also have an automatic message-switching system.
